3rd May 2009
On Sunday 3rd May between 3pm and 5pm, the Hayling’s BEST M.T.I. ‘Playing on the Plaza’ series of free live music events, began its 2009 season on the ‘Liveability Plaza’ at Eastoke Corner.
Home grown Island talent once again was well to the fore this year, with Hayling based artists headlineing the first concert at this increasingly popular open air seafront music venue.
A welcome return for the opening gig and back by popular demand, after rousing performances as part of the 2008 inaugural season, are locally based rock band ‘Rusty Strings’, and multitalented keyboard player and vocalist Jack Cottle.
Many will remember it was Jack who last year unexpectedly and with great aplomb, carried off an entire concert at incredibly short notice, when the booked star had to cancel at the very last minute. Totally unfazed by the added responsibility and longer set, Jack who had been booked purely as the support proceeded to amaze everyone, taking the Plaza by storm and giving what many regulars consider to be one of most memorable performances of the entire 2008 season.
The well known Rusty Strings, who many have seen playing not only in 2008 at the Plaza but also at the Hayling Carnival for many years now, entertained the crowds in the second half with many of their own compositions, covers and plenty of banter with the crowd.
